Lines: 106 Posted: Mon Feb 26 04:47:26 1990 As time has been passing and more and more MUDs spring up everywhere, I am barely in control of a list too. I was intending to mail every wizard a form of certain aspects of MUDum that I though was important. Classes seem to be taking their chunk of time so I haven't gotten around to it. So I will share with you some *minor* findings. I am not an AbnerMUDer by any means. But I have a few of them as well. Unfortunately, (for you) I haven't tested them out recently. They are as follows. (Remember the disclaimer! 'Tis been a while.) TinyMUD derivatives follow. AbnerMUDs __________________________________ MIT.elric.mit.edu login as mud telnet 129.16.30.14 telnet 192.35.96.111 telnet 128.214.7.13 jackerwocky telnet 18.62.0.54 23 telnet 128.173.5.10 telnet 128.2.234.12 earth.cchem.berkeley.edu 128.32.104.102 TinyMUD offspring are covered a little better here. I tried walking over to all of them before posting this and I got the number of objects each had (as of 10:15PM EST). I had problems getting through to a few. Some are most likely closed for good. Most are just stripped down TinyMUDs but some have a definite flavor and atmosphere. Commands do not vary that widely, but if you do frequent more than two often you will find yourself making syntax errors or attempting commands which do not exist. Experiment yourselves.... problem, down, and closed are varying degrees of nonopperation. Don't worry about problems, they will be up within a day, if they ever actually went down. Down means they need some time. Closed means I don't expect it to be open ever. Please correct me if I am in err. 88179 TinyMUD@128.2.218.26 (daisy.learning.cs.cmu.edu) port 4201 prob. Comming a strong second is PoohMUD. Both of which are getting close to AbnerMUDs. ISLANDIA is the first MUD running on the new publically available start-up database. All of these muds are cool if you give them a chance. I do not suggest you go out and make yourselves a huge cyberterminal. Erik and I talked of this being done for each and every mud. Erik writes: At first I thought that you should be able to get to every mud from every other one but now I'm not so sure. For example, right now to get to Pooh I believe you have to get to Mbongo. To get to Mbongo you have to be in Hell (I think...could be wrong...) I kind of like this...It seems OK that you would have to make 'stops' in the 'bop' process...By having to stop at other MUD's you are forced to at least see what has been added to the Portal at that interstitial MUD...new MUD's would be discovered in a "surprise" type of way in that way. What I'm getting at is that it seems that wasting our time trying to set up a Bop to every MUD at every other might spoil it. I think that every new MUD should have a 'non-stop-bop' to the original MUD at CMU...just to keep in touch with the history of the thing... I agree with this idea to a point. I believe everyone should have some ease in getting around. It isn't too tough to go from one place to another. But major spokes should exist. I don't think there should be too many of these in a mud. And they shouldn't be just thrown in doorway links! :-) Unless of course, room numbers will be specified to the recieving MUD. Then things start to get hairy, confusing, complex, and interesting. Oh well. Have fun. And don't do anything I wouldn't think of. SirRiel (webster@topaz.rutgers.edu)
