***************************** COMPILING HINTS ****************************
These are comments to help you compile the mud. Some of them are based on
what people have told me and I don't have first hand experience of whether
they work or not. FLAGS is in the makefile by the way.

Since the makefile only has a few dependencies in it then if you change
of add any functions other than the ones in the top level directory you
should remove it the apparopriate .o file and type make. If for instance you
change an object function and nothing else make won't know and will say ogmud
is up to date.

This is the bit where I know what I'm talking about:
----------------------------------------------------

AIX 3.x (IBM RS6000):
Will compile with no problems (since it was developed on AIX and OSF/1).
If it doesn't then there's something wrong with your system setup.
I don't know what will happen on AIX 2.x but I assume it'll compile.
Use cc - xlc won't work.

OSF/1 (DEC alpha):
Ditto AIX.

Solaris (SunOS 5.x):
The easy solution is to use the berkeley compiler - /usr/ucb/cc. For some
reason even though ucbcc and /usr/ucb/cc should be the same, one works and one
doesn't. I haven't bothered to look into it to find out why. If your system has
it just uncomment the appropriate line in the makefile.
If for some reason your system doesnt have it and you must use the standard
solaris compiler uncomment the "#define random() rand()" in defs.h then set
"FLAGS= -lsocket -lnsl" in the makefile.

Linux:
Compiled with only a few errant warnings on Linux 1.0 and ran fine but
but it seemed a bit slow. Mind you , put a real OS on an intel chip and it
gets an asthma attack so maybe Linux + mud was too much for the poor old PC.

Mach (Next):
Compiles ok and seems to run ok but I can't be bothered to do extensive tests
due to horrendous net lag between my site and the Next's site. I'm not going to
make any guarantees and it does seem to run a bit fast, maybe the alarm()
function in Mach doesn't work in seconds or maybe the random() function
isn't <shrug>. Tested on Mach 3.0 & 3.2.

Irix (Silicon Graphics):
Compiles and runs fine using cc with no flags.

This is the bit where I'm just going by what other people have told me:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

HP-UX (HP 9000):
Apparently it compiles if you set FLAGS to "-Aa -D_HPUX_SOURCE" so Ive been
told but I find that hard to believe. If it doesn't work try -lBSD and if
that doesn't work maybe with -lsocket too.
You may also need to add "#undef feof" in defs.h for older versions of HP-UX.
(Am I the only programmer who uses the feof() function?)

SCO:
You may need to do "FLAGS=-lsocket". I'm really not sure about SCO.

SunOS 4:
Don't really know. You could try the solaris stuff but I think you may be out
of luck here since SunOS was/is neither full ansi or full posix.
