******************************* OGHAM 2 **********************************

Current version: 2.1.0 (See DOCS/diffs for changes from last version)

This is a short file giving an overall view of the Ogham MUD system.

Getting started
---------------

Once you have compiled the mud (see DOCS about this) type "go" which is a
a short shell script and the mud will automatically run itself as a background
process. Log into the mud using the test login: username "fred" ,
password "test" and you will be given god priviledges.
A god is currently level 22 though this can be changed by changing the
macros. (wizards are level 20 , demigods level 21).
Some objects are created in the mud on startup , other you can clone
yourself once in the mud. Type "masters" for a full list of objects available
then type "clone <object_name>" to create the object in your current room.
Type "help commands" for a list of commands. The "wizdata" command will show
you the object and room numbers whenever you do a look.
I have included a small mudlib with this distribution which is in the
/island directory. It is part of a much larger much which I am writing myself
and it contains some important examples of how to do things. Eg the shop
with Old Salty, the room under the waterfall which allows you to sleep and
recover stamina etc...

A history lesson
----------------

Ogham (Ogam):
A Dark Ages (400 - 1066AD) rune script invented in Ireland and
used mainly between the 5th & 9th centuries in the British Isles.
It consisted of line markings on the edges of stones and was used among
other things on gravestones. Because of the lack of material remains from
that period in history it is difficult to tell if it was used extensivly
elsewhere. Translations of Ogham scripts has been made possible since
a lot of Ogham markings were accompanied by the Latin equivalent.
Then of course William the Conquerer came along and kicked the stuffing out
of King Harold and that was pretty much that for the Celts and Saxons.
Mind you , it wasn't all gloom and doom - the Normans built some pretty nice
castles.

In the case of this server OGHAM also stands for Oh My God , Heres
Another MUD. The original code for Ogham came from the NUTS talker system
which I also wrote. This allowed me to get a mud system up and running
quickly but it also forced the mud into being a compromise structurally
since users were not objects like the mud npcs and items were, rather
they were entries into a hard coded structure array. Since I had no
intention of releasing the mud when I first started this wasn't a problem
since it didn't matter how ugly the code was. However after going through
a number of version updates for Ogham 1 (final released version was 1.6.1
though 1.6.2 was completed later on) I decided it was time to start afresh.

Compatability with Ogham 1
--------------------------

The room functions are compatible though remember that now there are 12
elements in the links arrays and that "struct obj_data *" has become
"OBJECT".

The object functions are less compatible. Case 4 now calls the death code
as opposed to a description. There is no description call , instead there
is a ->desc element in the object structure. Various object structure
elements have been renamed (evil -> align , eps -> exps etc ) and some
object functions have different parameters.

Any code pertaining to users is completely incompatible and might as well
be thrown out and rewritten.

One very important function change is that write_alluser() has now become
write_room_except(). See the function documentation file for further
details.

Copyright etc
-------------

This software is copyright to me. It may be altered to suit your specific
needs but please remember the original copyright is mine and also PLEASE
note any modifications in the "version" command. This is so I don't get bug
reports for code that is nothing to do with me.

If you have any genuine problems or bugs email me, but I DO NOT want email
telling me how you don't like the code and how I should alter it or anything
along those lines. If you don't like it alter it yourself but don't blame me
if it goes wrong.

Anyway , thats about it. Go and read the stuff in the DOCS directory and
have fun :)
