***************************** COMPILING HINTS ****************************
These are comments to help you compile the mud. Some of them are based on
what people have told me and I don't have first hand experience of whether
they work or not.

---> Unless otherwise stated just type "cc main.c". <---

If you get strange errors relating to system library files you could try
rearranging the order of the system #includes in main.c particularly the
<sys/xxxxxx> ones.

This is the bit where I know what I'm talking about:
----------------------------------------------------

AIX 3.x (IBM RS6000):
Will compile with no problems (since it was developed on AIX and OSF/1).
If it doesn't then there's something wrong with your system setup.
I don't know what will happen on AIX 2.x but I assume it'll compile.
Use cc - xlc won't work.

OSF/1 (DEC alpha):
Ditto AIX.

Mach (Next):
Compiles but crashes with "Bus error" on running. This appears to be due
to the toupper() function bombing out when given an element of a string
in the write_syslog() function.
I don't know if this is a general problem for Next machines or whether
the machine I tried it on had a fault. At any rate, if you're a regular
Next user and it is a common problem then you're probably aware of it and
know how to fix it. Removing toupper (and probably tolower) from the code
will do the trick but its a bit drastic.

This is the bit where I'm just going by what other people have told me:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Linux:
I had a brief go at compiling on linux with version 1.0.0 and that didn't
compile. I don't have access to that machine any more but version 1.1.0
should work. If it doesn't compile it should be only very minor changes
required but I'm not going to make any guarantees.

HP-UX (HP 9000):
Apparently it compiles if you do "cc -Aa -D_HPUX_SOURCE main.c"
You may also need to add "#undef feof" in globals.h.

SCO:
You may need to do "cc -lsocket main.c". I really am not sure about SCO.

SunOS/Solaris:
Apparently it can be compiled on SunOS 4 but not with the bundled compiler
because this doesn't like ansi much. I don't know about Solaris.

SGI:
Errr... try "cc -cckr main.c" perhaps....
